The Environmental Protection Campaign in Sanaag and Bari Regions was implemented by IFES Institute in partnership with EPASSOM Somalia, with partner support for community-focused environmental protection and natural resource conservation. The project addressed the environmental pressures associated with charcoal production and unsustainable exploitation of natural resources.

About the campaign

The "Stop Charcoaling Program" is a community-focused environmental protection campaign in the Sanaag and Bari regions.

It was implemented by IFES Institute in partnership with EPASSOM Somalia, with partner support for environmental protection and natural resource conservation.

The campaign starts from a simple belief: the people who live closest to the land are the best protectors of it.

The challenge

Charcoal production and the unsustainable use of natural resources put heavy pressure on the environment.

Why it matters

Fragile dryland ecosystems are under threat
Trees, soil and grazing land that families depend on are being lost
Once woodland disappears, it is slow and difficult to bring back
Protecting it needs community awareness and community action

Our approach

The campaign promoted greater awareness of environmental stewardship and sustainable resource management, contributing to the protection of fragile dryland ecosystems.

Work was built around people: conversations with elders, women and youth, field visits to the woodland, and practical action to protect and restore the land.
