Project & Research Overview
This project combined applied research and field-based engagement to better understand the economic realities of women entrepreneurs in Bosaso, one of Puntland’s key commercial hubs. Implemented by IFES Institute Somalia in partnership with ACDO Somalia, the initiative focused on identifying sustainable livelihood opportunities while addressing the structural barriers limiting women’s participation in local markets.

The research component involved direct engagement with women operating in small-scale businesses, including retail trade, home-based enterprises, and informal service sectors. Data collection methods included interviews, focus group discussions, and market observations, allowing for a comprehensive analysis of income patterns, business challenges, and growth potential.

Findings from the study highlighted critical constraints such as limited access to financial services, restricted market linkages, low business development skills, and socio-economic barriers affecting women’s full economic participation. At the same time, the research identified emerging opportunities in local value chains and urban market systems that could be leveraged to enhance women’s income generation.

Reach and Implementation Focus
The project targeted women entrepreneurs across key districts of Bosaso, engaging diverse groups including youth-led businesses, informal traders, and home-based producers. Through structured consultations and participatory research approaches, the initiative ensured that women’s voices and lived experiences were central to the findings and recommendations.

Outcomes and Impact
The project produced actionable, evidence-based recommendations to support the design of future livelihood and economic empowerment interventions. It contributed to a deeper understanding among stakeholders of the barriers and opportunities within women-led enterprises, while strengthening the foundation for programs focused on financial inclusion, skills development, and market access.

The initiative also reinforced institutional collaboration between IFES Institute and ACDO Somalia, enhancing their capacity to deliver research-informed development programs that promote inclusive economic growth and resilience in Puntland.
